Ivan Karabits. Symphonic and chamber compositions.
"1. Concerto for orchestra ¹2: In works of Ivan Karabits a concert for orchestra genre includes features of symphony and its brilliant concert incarnation. Along with the conflict of figurative spheres and their consistent dynamic development the work features the elements of instrumental theater in which the orchestra plays the role of performer and at the same time imitates an active listener. (...)
2. Concertino for nine performers: (...) Combination of many different orchestral colors, separate bright instrumental solos, and elements of jazz improvisation – all this can be heard in three parts of the composition. Cadence (...) comes as a great surprise for the listener.
3. Music from Waterside: During his concert tour in New York, Ivan Karabits stayed at the house of his close friends – Ukrainian-born Americans Orest and Marichka Slupchynsky. The view from the window of their house inspired the composer to write Music from Waterside. (...)
4. Six preludes for strings: This cycle represents the author's transcription of six preludes from "24 preludes for piano" for string orchestra. The composer made an original selection of preludes which included miniatures painting six different contrasting moods – from lyrical pensive waltz through strict restraint and philosophical reflections to optimistic elation.
5. Lyric scenes: Lyric scenes present the atmosphere of theatrical play already felt in the name of the work. The imagination draws fort contrasting scenic miniatures with participation of two actors where violin plays the leading role.
6. Sonata ¹1 for violoncello and piano: (dedicated to Borys Liatoshynsky) When this sonata was written, the composer was the student of Kyiv Conservatory who was going through creative search and intensive formation of artistic personality. The work began under the guidance of a leading Ukrainian composer and teacher of Ivan Karabits, Borys Liatoshynsky. Because of the sudden death of the professor, the student had to finish the composition by himself. (...)

Levkovych's stile can be characterized as vivid, colorful and original. His works are composed in a very modern manner utilizing a serial technique, while being simple and romantic. He applies the timbers of different instruments very well and experiments with orchestral sounds.

Valentyn Sylvestrov, Kyiv Camerata. Meditation (symphony for violoncello and chamber orchestra).

His "Meditation" is a symphony for a violoncello and a chamber orchestra. Meditation in a general sense is a state, a process and quality at the same time. Since a symphony is called to reproduce and to recreate the first, the second and the third, it is hopeless to reproduce the content. This music...
