Gogol's brilliant talent is based on the characteristic fabulous literary language with which he braids as though a lace of fantastic, however at the same time real images. The widely known work filled with exactly that sort of language and such images is "Viy". The thrilling and at the same time romantic events keep the audience tense up to the final word.
Dramatically different literary qualities are revealed by Gogol in his work "Taras Bulba". Here the author appears as an unsurpassed historian operating factual materials for the purpose of development of the novel's specific characters. The events that lie in the basis of the work are Cossack and peasants revolts of 1637-1638 headed by Gunya and Ostryanyn.
