Maria Marczyk (then Kudryavtseva) was one of founders of the famous Bozhychi ensemble, she loudly rang throughout Ukraine as member of the Soncekliosh band, then there was the Kuku Shanel project and during 2014 Maidan they developed friendly collaboration with Mark Marczyk. As a result, they formed a family and the Ukrainian-Canadian project Balaklava Blues, where Maria is primarily responsible for the folk component, while Mark for the electronic one. This is electro-folk that one should not be ashamed of naming indie and that does not shy away from pop art methods. Here, antique texts are juxtaposed with dubstep and blues, the authentic singing style is intercepted by fragments of Soviet cartoons or the voice of a soldier of the Russian-Ukrainian war, dance drive suddenly sinks into pauses filled with silent laments. In short, a lot of things are mixed here and that is mixed thoughtfully, tastefully, it is well-matured. And, sure, with irony the very name of the album, "FLY", hints at that transparently enough. A very good piece of work and a great promise for the future.
