We are living in the old world, and it is clear. And there can be no new word from someone who is looking exactly for it. But someone looking for his or her own self can still say something interesting. Honestly, without bells and whistles, without pretence. That's why it seems to me that the new album from Irena Karpa and Qarpa Band is the music of the world which does not exist. It does not exist outside big cities, the Web, the utter interpenetration of cultures, and dilution of borders. This is the voice woven out of thousand voices – tough, indifferent, defenseless and warm, flexible, dark and transparent. Common. And, at the same time, lonely. Exactly to the point when you get frightened, if you do not look into your own eyes. Or cozy – as real synthesis, probably, happens if none of the components loses their selfness. As Brodskyi once put it, the God keeps all. The homogenous mass without lumps is not what's intended. The world is tasty only when it shines with its every molecule... And it is this respect and attention to every line in a rather complicated pattern which, in my view, is determining for "& I made a Man". I may be wrong. But it does not matter any more. Qarpa's new CD is nice enough, but a not a huge development in style. The previous album was more unified, made more of an impact. But this one will probably grow after a few times listening, there are some nice enough hook lines for that.
By the way, I cannot understand, or link to the album, "Hedgehog's" description. It's rock'n'roll dude! Don't analyse it too hard.
