"Ukrainian Dances. Part 2" is a continuation of the collection of melodies of folk dance that were performed by Ukrainian peasants before the 1960's, up until the period when live music in the village was replaced by the audio set. Unlike the CD "Ukrainian Dances. Part 1" which was recorded entirely by the folk band "Bozhychi" by Susanna Karpenko and Illya Fetysov, together with violin virtuoso Serhiy Okhrimchuk, the recording of "Ukrainian Dances. Part 2" was carried out by the above mentioned artists together with original folk musicians: accordionist Dmytro Moiseenko and drummer Valentyn Davydenko. Both are originally from Ivankivsky district in Kyiv region. Therefore one can say that their performance is presented in the tradition of playing the accordion "Khromka" and drums in the Kyiv region. Melodies, which were included the compilation "Ukrainian Dances. Part 2", are accompanied by dance, while the choreography is explained and presented in the second part of the video tutorial of the "School of Traditional Ukrainian Folk Dance". The release includes a 12-page booklet describing the contents (in English and Ukrainian), as well as narratives by folk musicians and chants for the dances (in Ukrainian).

...here, one can hear remarkable, very beautiful Ukrainian romances – this is, however surprising, quite a rare genre. Still, the contents of the album does not go down to romances only – for, as we already mentioned, the ensemble feels easy in various genres.

The group likes to arrange folk songs – and often chooses not too well-known variants for this purpose. Here and there, own, author songs by "Susidy" appear among folk ones – but this is even not always noticeable at once, because everything is done in the same stylistics. It happened so this time again.

..the new disc is special for three reasons at once. The first one: until now, no discs devoted to Ukrainian folk dances have yet been released within the limits of the collection. The second – in this case, you will almost not see known names. Well, and the third reason is already more habitual: you will hardly be able to find the recordings represented here anywhere else, in fact, they were made especially for the NRCU funds.

Levko Durko, as usual, does not limit himself to just collecting enough songs for an album and releasing it. As he says himself, songs do not come to him upon request – an impulse from outside is needed. Some event, a funny scene, conversation or even simply a word – and only then songs appear quite independently. Thus, as you see, not one by one, but in real thematic cycles.

Well, here is an absolutely fresh creation by Levko Durko. If his previous discs were intended, in fact, for children, this one will be able to cheer up adults as well. Actually, it is even advisable not to offer this disc to the junior generation – it contains such jokes that may be heard only in an adult company.

The second CD is just as good as the first one. Until the second CD came out, the first was THE CD I listened to every day. It's on my ipod, pc, bluray, car. Everywhere I go, it's with me. It is uplifting to hear the heart of Ukrainian music expressed in such a vivid style. I played it to my kids, ex-wife and friends, they did not get it. But, that is OK, I have many more years listening, also stage performances of Ukrainian dances in NYC with Mr. Genza, (Berhovintzy), my ears are more discriminant to original sound and the beat has to be just right, because if the beat does not move your legs, better get a new pair.
