Mariya Stefyuk, National Honored Bandurist Capella. Zhuravka.
It is not a secret that Mariya Stefyuk achieved world-wide glory and recognition exactly as an opera singer – classic arias in her performance are known and valued far beyond the borders of Ukraine. But, as well as all prominent opera singers – at least, Ukrainian ones – she has never avoided performing folk songs. There are far more than a dozen of them in Mariya Stefyuk’s repertoire, a real several-hour program – a part of this reserve is represented on the disc "Zhuravka". And this is, sure, not just a contribution into the tradition, it is something more than that. In fact, even from the strictly technical point of view, her voice is a perfectly tuned instrument able to reflect the tiniest melody nuances. This would not be enough, but add here the dramatic talent, the ability to convey the most refined, deepest feelings – and then you get performance approximated to the ideal. In the end, we have already noted several times that Ukrainian folk songs performed by high class opera professionals is virtually always something extraordinarily beautiful. Besides, in this case beauty and expressiveness of Mariya Stefyuk’s voice have really powerful support – all the songs are performed with accompaniment of the National Honored Chapel of Bandura-Players of Ukraine named after H. I. Maiboroda, one of the best collectives of the world of its kind. Thus, this is a really good disc – a nice present for all those who value the clarity of the Ukrainian folk song.

This disc was created on the eve of Mykola Lysenko's anniversary – and, perhaps, it should be emphasized that it is work by young performers. It's nice – both because they have managed to record and release this program, and because they chose him – Lysenko. Let us just keep it in mind that one can talk about it, or one can – do it. And it is done – well.
