Fusion Orchestra. Apocrypha. /digi-pack/
No doubt, it is very nice to discover for oneself some new talented music – and the previous album by Fusion Orchestra, "Octagon" was such a discovery. But you never know what will happen next – that is why it is cool when continuation of acquaintance appears not less interesting than the beginning. It is especially nice that the album "Apocrypha" does not repeat previous ideas, but pushes off from them and makes a step forward. Yes, in this music you can still hear well the hot southern sun – but still, on the foreground, you have original cool elegance. And one can feel based on which law the space of the disc is designed: rather not to satiate, but to extend this space as much as possible – but softly. That is why here there are enough light, thin strokes, tiny details – but they do not prevent you from breathing, do not fence the horizon. If you have ever seen a large open space – a steppe, for example – you know: even a thousand birds are not able to cover, to fill the sky. Vice versa – with them it becomes even higher, deeper. And – closer... Personally I like to hear in music well-accented pauses, it is they that make it possible to follow not only thoughts and feelings of musicians, but also – pace next to them. Here this is – both possible, and pleasant. If we get back to the name of the album... Are there in one's life a lot of things as near, elusive, light, necessary, distant and warm as – the Mystery?.. if one is not afraid, sure...
Anton Jozhik Leyba (Hedgehog)

Sergey Bogdan – acoustic guitar
Eugene Popov – piano, guitar (4)
Pavel Voronezhsky – bass
Denis Melnikov – drums, percussion

Volodymyr Solyanyk, Mykola Oorzhak, Serhiy Khmelyov. Tanets i zvuk orla. /digi-pack/. (The Dance and Sounds of an Eagle)

..the album is not free improvisation for keyboards, but – a space of co-creation in the ethno-jazz spirit. Space so deep, versatile – there is enough magic of rhythms, and magic of silence, not to mention the fact that Oorzhak's throat singing  inevitably adds very characteristic colors.
Domestic price: 222.60UAH, International price: $15.90USD

Anton Pyvovarov. Lemkian Suite. /digi-pack/.

..the fact that a Kyivite turns to Lemkian songs is unexpected and interesting. The musicians are very caution about the authentic material, they do not shutter the songs’ architecture. Instead, they delicately unwrap and decorate the main lines, having arrived in their arrangements at a certain common denominator for the generally diverse plays..

Marinita. Marinita. /digi-pack/.

Marinita is, in fact, Maryna Zakharova, who was the heart of the very original project Anno Domini. So, Marinita is a certain development to the story, testing herself in a new, even more open format: with the opportunity to collaborate without any special linking to a certain composition. The debut album under the new name...

ShockolaD, Ewa Novel. Nova. /digi-pack/.

..the circle is closed for them to reach something new: from the initial composition, only Anastasia Litvinyuk and Ihor Hnydyn have stayed, the rest of the lines are within responsibility of our Polish brethren led by Ewa Novel. And somehow quite expectedly the band's music has regained its distinct ethno-jazz colors, stepping aside from the previous lounge rails.
Domestic price: 250.60UAH, International price: $17.90USD

Nino Katamadze, Insight. Yellow.

..And there ever is love for the music – no matter where musicians roam following the quest while working on new material. Yellow. Life-giving. Hot and humid. Warm. Dry and mirage-like. Joyful. Acute. Crumbling. Spicy. Soft. Diverse and – alive... Listen.
Domestic price: 250.60UAH, International price: $17.90USD

Olga Voichenko, Sergey Kapeliushok, Pavlo Shepeta. Spivanochky moi. Ukrainian folk songs. /eco-pack/. (My Songs)

The recording is luxurious – perhaps, one could hardy put it in other words. This is something that so far we have not had: a vocal and instrumental album of Ukrainian folk songs at the intersection of jazz, chamber and symphonic, variety art music (such as, for example, songs by Frank Sinatra or Astrud Gilberto)...
Domestic price: 320.60UAH, International price: $22.90USD

Er.J.Orchestra. The Unicorn. (remastered). /digi-pack/.

This is the third album in the official discography of Er.J.Orchestra. And I really hope that it will be not a stop, not completion of the trilogy, but one of the many pearls on the thread. Such music simply must be incarnated, sound, fill the space – at least because honest beauty, dignity, authenticity live in it...
Domestic price: 320.60UAH, International price: $22.90USD

Nino Katamadze, Insight. Green.

Very transparent, juicy, quiet and confident and yet full of irrepressible life – this is what this work appears like. Stylistically, it continues the trend including the albums "Black" and "Red" – the pure jazz-rock line, with no direct immersions into the lounge or symphonicity. But in a much softer, tender version.
Domestic price: 250.60UAH, International price: $17.90USD

Yuliya Roma. Raduysya. Ukrainian carols. /digi-pack/. (Rejoice)

To enrich them with modern colors without destroying the subtle paths of the light joy inherent in Christmas carols and shchedrivkas – which is not an easy task. Since it requires great attention and tolerance. Finally, it just requires love for this music, for the roots – and love that is creative. And it seems – they have succeeded.
Domestic price: 250.60UAH, International price: $17.90USD

DomRa. Kupal‘s‘ka.

Victor Solomin is virtually the only jazz domra-player in Ukraine, therefore the both of his ethno-jazz projects – "SolominBand" and "DomRa" – have here no immediate analogues just by definition. Besides, "DomRa" can boast two key instruments at once: those are the domra and the vocal, and it is they that provide the "ethnic component" of the sounding here.
Domestic price: 152.60UAH, International price: $10.90USD

Er.J.Orchestra. The Unicorn Live. (2CD).

...each of them separately does not really have almost anything too sophisticated, to say nothing about the superfluous – but these transparent lines interlace so pointedly and charmingly, that an indescribably rich matter of light appears. In the case of Er.J.Orchestra, it is not only about concert improvisations – the issue is discovery and creation of old-new worlds, no less.
Domestic price: 348.60UAH, International price: $24.90USD

ShockolaD. Single. /mini-pack/.

ShockolaD again combines Ukrainian folklore with improvisational music, and the ethnic component, as well as before, is strong and expressive – but this time the group represents fusion that literally borders on world music. In other words, in our view, this is soft music understandable for a very wide public – which, nevertheless, remains pleasantly intelligent, delicate.
Domestic price: 250.60UAH, International price: $17.90USD

Igor Zakus, Z-Band. Kolomyyky. /digi-pack/. (Kolomyikas)

"Kolomyikas" is a good album with bright pieces that are able to capture the audience as it is, even without associations with the material it derives from. In the end, there was no "weak link" in the team of the album’s creators. That is, probably, the reason why, without regard to the intense structure, there is within the music fabric – freedom, which makes it possible to breathe deeply.
Domestic price: 306.60UAH, International price: $21.90USD

Yuriy Kovtun. BraviBelli.

...the album at once creates elated, festive mood – but in a surprising way. In the correct way. Because, although about a half of the compositions can hardly be called merry ones – a smile is very expressly felt in them. Somewhere dim, somewhere transparent, somewhere dreamy, somewhere thoughtful – but it is present in each piece, and it warms.
Domestic price: 250.60UAH, International price: $17.90USD

Motion Trio. Pictures from the Street.

It seems to me that none who has at least once heard performance by Motion Trio – and the more so none who has seen it – will ever forget, mix it up with anybody. And the thing is not only original composition – although you will hardly find among performers of jazz, art rock, folk fusion another trio what would consist exceptionally of accordions.
Domestic price: 382.20UAH, International price: $27.30USD

Fusion Orchestra. Octagon. /digi-pack/

It is great pleasure – to listen to music that has let in, changed, satiated and breathed out so many bright impressions, lives, root... When music is wide open – everybody can drink from it, see one's face in it, find in its one's real.
Domestic price: 306.60UAH, International price: $21.90USD

"Fusion Orchestra returns for a new release here in 2007, Apocrypha sees the band taking some slight changes from their previous release, utilizing more bass forward rhythms, and a couple long tracks. I was surprised to notice that this CD was very short considering we are in the CD age where most recordings are over an hour, this clocks in at just around 36 minutes. This band is something of an anomaly considering that they are coming from a territory that is not so well known for an abundance of musical culture, at least around the globe or in progressive circles. They also seem to me to be a little bit misnamed. One would always imagine the great 70's bands like Mahavishnu, Return to Forever, Ponty, Eleventh House, etc when conjuring images of a Fusion Orchestra. Yet this band falls far more towards radio friendly jazz, with some slight progressivity, but nothing that is truly fusion as most are familiar with at this site. I do find that they are taking more daring chances on this CD from the previous one I have reviewed here.

These are some good musicians, and have their own identity and direction, and they are deserving of finding their audience, as this music is very listenable. I am only reserving my compliments for the reason that this does not take Fusion music to higher ground, nor are the members making any impacting statements with their instruments, as it stands, it is nice, easy listening jam jazz, with very little intricate structure. The 13 minute title track is the best thing I have heard them do, it is also the one song that seems to be where they are playing the most unrestrained and show some aggressiveness. More of that, and I might be raving about this group, yet they seem most content on being a jazz forward, relaxing band that fits into the easy listening category far more than the Fusion music that we are most familiar with".

I like the way this tight and talented jazz band communicates clearly and creatively on every front. What comes through is a casual and confident friendliness - from their web site presence to their instrumental voices. Listening online to their mp3s, the invitation starts with high quality production. All tracks are mixed and mastered in-house, and these guys are good. Each of the quartet's strengths comes through clearly - quite a challenge since the music is rich with parallel expression and experimentation. A big and sometimes funky bass, energetic percussion, keys flowing easily from classical to jazz, and the guitar musing with everyone in the room. It's great when everyone talks at once and the conversation still makes sense!

If you get a chance, don't just listen to Fusion Orchestra, visit with them online. In addition to the groovy fusion, you'll find well-composed photos, responses to your messages - in English, and that all-too-elusive feeling that we're all going to get along just fine. Hey guys... when's the North American tour?

Firmness and masculinity of the rhythm combined with tenderness and sensory sounding of the keys. In this music we can trace some philosophy, some clearness, some balance between any extreme points and exotic features…

Concur with Gregory Piere's comments. This is a very nice, elegant, sophisticated piece of modern jazz! Kept me listening and involved thru the entire track all the way to the end (and what a classy ending it is)! For me, all notes, beats, breaks, changes and melodies worked with no unnecessary dead spaces. Tight arrangement and wonderful piano work. All instruments fed the piano melodies and yet maintained their own individuality and clarity - not always an easy thing to do, especially with jazz (but that's also why this music can be difficult to play and master for all but the very best jazz musicians). You guys accomplished that, and my hats off to all of you for this very marvelous and top-of-the-line jazzy tune!

You guys have a very clean and polished sound. Excellent. The dynamics are amazing. You sound like you are telepathicly tight in your breaks and turns. And the sound is moving and soothing at the same time. A very nice contrast. Excellent indeed!!!
