Jonathan Safran Foer. Vse yasno. (Everything Is Illuminated)
"This life-affirming novel combines everything that can be combined: a journey of a twenty-year-old American along the modern Ukraine, the history of a Jewish township destroyed during the Holocaust, letters by a not very literate young translator from Odessa about our modern life (as imagined by the American author). Holding a yellowish photo in his hands, the protagonist of the novel leaves for the distant, unknown Ukraine in order to find the person who rescued his grandfather during World War II. His companions are the same age guy from Odessa, the "blind" old man, and the dog Sammy Davis Jr. Jr. This faerie and unpredictable journey transforms into the path towards oneself, a search for answers to eternal questions."

Translated from English by Rostyslav Semkiv.
(Nota bene: it is based on this book, "Everything Is Illuminated", that the same-titled film was created starring Elijah Wood and Eugene Hutz – the frontman of Gogol Bordello)
