Тема нового дослідження в книзі Оксани Забужко «Як рубали вишневий сад, або Довга дорога з Бад-Емса» на мою думку цікава саме тим, що звернена до проблеми російсько-українських відносин. І саме в такій послідовності – російсько-українських. Україна, на жаль, поки що програє гібридне протистояння з північно-східним сусідом в питанні відстоювання своєї історичної ідентичності. Коли очільники держави-сусіда, завдячуючи більшості наших телеканалів та домінуванню російського контексту в Інтернеті, постійно проштовхують міфи про «братні» народи (або міфологему єдиного народу) та нашу спільну історію, українське суспільство в значній мірі сприймає це досить спокійно, не намагаючись хоча б трохи довідатись про справжнє своє історичне минуле, про корені тієї ідентичності, яка дала, дає і буде давати нам можливість вистояти і зберегти свою мову, свою культуру. Вистояти, незважаючи на Валуєвський указ і Бад-Емс, політику Петра I, Петра Валуєва, Петра Столипіна, двох Катерин (Першої та Другої) щодо українського народу. А потім були декрети Леніна, національна політика Сталіна, накази Жукова, репресії проукраїнської інтелігенції в 70-х та на початку 80-х XX століття...
Оксана Забужко у цій своїй книзі дає можливість читачам побачити не тільки агресивну російську політику, а й той вплив, який зробила українська культура, ментальність українського народу на розвиток російської культури, творення російської літератури загалом. і зокрема на твори Антона Чехова. А перед цим була просвітницька діяльність випускників Києво-Могилянської Академії на безмежних просторах Московії («вдячний» Петро I фактично ліквідував Академію). І просто необхідно читати «Як рубали вишневий сад, або Довга дорога з Бад-Емса», щоб знати свою історію і бути сильнішими.
