I even don’t know whether there was after Ostap Vyshnya in Ukrainian literature anyone similar to him – not by the manner, certainly – by the ability to joke in the literary way. So that you were reading it – and it were funny. Personally I made my acquaintance with his works due to my father. Who read, laughed and told me – because he knew a lot of these stories by heart. Most of all, probably, he loved exactly "Hunters’ Witticisms". It was already then that I came to know that for Ostap Vyshnya this cycle was one of his most favorite ones. It was already then that I came to know that this man suffered far not humorous repressions on the part of authorities. But – he returned. And not just returned – he went back to his serious matter of joking. True, since then in his jokes there were more and more sadness... Nevertheless, his talent of joking was real, sincere – that is why he has been known all through Ukraine for already dozens of years, and will still be known long. That is why he is also known far beyond its borders, his works have repeatedly been translated into many languages. And one more thing. There appears for some reason such feeling that Petrp Panchuk read these tales exactly as the author would read them, just as he felt them. There is in this reading some sort of very correct internal accordance, authenticity. Sounds true.
