Candidly speaking, I was surprised and impressed when I saw this edition. Once, I was interested in Merimee’s works, but I couldn’t even imagine that he was interested in Ukrainian history. At that, his attitude towards this topic wasn’t flippant – his "Bohdan Hmelnytskiy" is based on numerous documental evidence of that epoch. Sometimes, these documents gave rather controversial information. And it’s natural, as Russians, Poles and Ukrainians had different viewpoints concerning Bohdan Hmelnytskiy. However, Merimee was French… Thus, we have a more or less objective look at Hmelnytskiy, even if Merimee as a writer added some fiction. Anyway, the work reveals the things you can never find in ordinary books. And even if it was a fable, I would advise you to read it, because this book is totally absorbing. Merimee and Hmelnytskiy deserve you attention.
