Lead by Bohdan Hmelnytskyi kozaks laid siege to a small town Zbarazh, Polish shlyahta (gentry) lead by Ukraine’s worst enemy Yarema Vyshnevetskyi got trapped. Having run out of food, suffering from plague and other sicknesses Yarema sent dozens of messengers to the King of Poland to beg him provide them with military assistance, but none of the messengers could get through kozaks’ siege.
It seemed that kozaks will soon celebrate their victory, but something unpredictable happened – an alliance with the Crimean Khan Islam – Hirei broke up because of Khan’s treason: in the middle of the fierce fighting the Horde left the battle field…
Immense military losses, the perfidy of the closest allies, personal family tragedy – these are only some of those tortures that tormented the great Hetman of Ukraine at that time.
