The publication starts with consideration of issues related to origins and use of the term "genocide" in the international legal practice, including the focus on the history of drafting and adoption of the "Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide". The author considers formation of Stalin as the murderer of people; specific episodes of mass homicides in the 1930s (dispossessions, the famine in Ukraine in 1932-1933, destruction campaigns against non-Russian peoples), the Great Terror of 1937-1938, the problem of comparing Nazi and Soviet crimes. Considering the issue of genocide to be important for Ukrainians, N. Naimark hopes that this book will help them to more clearly understand its dynamics."
