"In 1921, the fate of the four-year war that Russia initiated against the Ukrainian People's Republic was decided in favor of the invaders. The UPR Army found itself interned behind barbed wire of the former Polish allies. However, armed struggle still lasted for years in almost all territories of Ukraine...

They were called bandits, gangsters, thugs and even in curses and anathemas they forbade to mention their names. In order to kill in the memory of the subdued masses the idea for which the rebels sacrificed their young lives. Yes, they shot, hanged, burned, destroyed – but whom? On their battle black flag there was the inscription "Freedom of Ukraine or Death". They did not leave the forest even when the foreign power started prevailing all around and there was no longer any hope for liberation. They – zalyshentsi, those who stayed – chose death."
