Among the most prominent Ukrainian composers of the 20
th century, a special honorable place belongs to the author of striking symphonic masterpieces, the wonderful operas "Bohdan Khmelnytsky" and "Nazar Stodolya" and the first national classic ballet "Lileya", to the People's Artist of Ukraine and the USSR, a laureate of Shevchenko Award Kostyantyn Dankevych. This prominent patriotic artist, who carried his sincere love to Ukraine all through his life, was born in Odesa and with his deeply national art he made an important contribution into the world and European music culture. In the composer's considerable reserve, all genres of music culture are represented: symphonies, oratorios, choral cantatas, instrumental ensembles, operas, operettas, songs, romances, music for dramatic plays and movies. But the top of his creativity was the heroic patriotic opera "Bohdan Khmelnytsky" composed by the talented master in one breath for Kyiv Opera Theater, where it was staged with an epic scale by the producer M. Stefanovych, conductor V. Piradov and the artist O. Hvostenko-Hvostov.
