Inter Quartet "Clarinetissimo!". Bachiazzola. (2CD). /digi-pack/. | | Track Reviews (0) |

Our visitors, probably, remember the chic – without overstatement – triptych release by the Kyiv saxophone quartet "Bravo, Sax!" focused on comprehensive illustration of the role to the saxophone in development of world music. Well, and now we are happy to note: the worthy idea has its worthy continuation, at that it was implemented with no less scope than the previous one. However, this time it is a diptych – a two-disc release – but. The very fact of origin of the Inter Quartet "Clarinetissimo!" deserves respect, as for the sake of this project musicians from four countries – Belgium, France, Switzerland, Ukraine (by the way, Ukraine is represented by Yuri Vasylevych, the founder and leader of the mentioned Kyiv quartet of saxophonists) – came together, and it could not be that easy. However, the scale of the project lies not only in geography – to make sure of that, it is enough to just look through the list of pieces. It is pleasant to indicate that there are also author compositions by participants of the Inter Quartet. And the very name of the release is eloquent: Bachiazzola – that is, from the "golden" classics incarnated by Bach and to modern poly-stylistics, which intertwines variety art, jazz and folklore, incarnated by Piazzolla. In this sense, the clarinet today is one of the most versatile instruments – and, by the way, three hundred years ago composers, as a rule, did not dare to risk including it into orchestras. However, such attitude did not last long – during the recent two hundred years, the clarinet has been one of main voices of both folk and author music on our planet. In my opinion, this is absolutely natural. Its ability to convey the most delicate emotional tints and states, from a hotshot scream to tender whisper, from merry laughter with sad eyes to an act of magic, from the bazaar of nightclubs to universal clarity – strikes. Actually, I would not undertake naming another wind instrument able to so authentically convey the very combination of joy and sadness, or, at the same time, remote contemplation and thirst for life. Each of these states separately – yes, there are options, and quite a lot. And in the harmonious combination – well, maybe, the French horn, and that’s it... However, that already depends on musicians’ skills – and skills of the Inter Quartet raises no doubt. It is pleasant to take this release in hands not only due to the great design, its contents is a lace of real, delicately decorated music gems. ..these are anyway not flashes or explosions, but – light fog, hints, mid-tones, mid-shades.. Heat and cool interweave here rather whimsically – one only needs to make a little step aside to be inside, in the heart of the music, and for it to appear in one's heart.

As the title promises, the album has turned out quite strange – but in a good sense. This is the strangeness that can only be afforded by good, versatile musicians – otherwise, originality may easily turn into farce, showing off. This did not happen here – one virtually feels with one's skin in what a thin, delicate way all of that is compiled.

On the one hand, there seems no be nothing superfluous – even Aleksandrov, oddly enough, has not added too much pepper, even though he knows how to do it at the level of "excellent". And on the other – the organism works so smoothly, without failures, that the entire album literary flies at one breath...

"Fever" is a studio work. So, on the one hand, there is no living "breathing of the audience", the proper concert experience. But on the other – there is no room for concerns, everything is polished to shine (although, I must say, at concerts the quartet also sounds so smoothly that sometimes it seems almost unbelievable)...

"Swing Cocktail" is a present for all those who love the emotions of "live" recordings and, respectively, concert features of performance of evergreens. Moreover, this time the purely saxophone composition has been expanded – on the album, you will have a chance to hear the clarinet, piano, bass, and drums. They do not sound in every piece – in this case, these are rather spices.

The album is a collection of concert recordings – and here, you will find not only jazz evergreens performed by the saxophone quartet, which would be quite natural. As evident from the title – "Classics & Jazz", half of the album is composed of classical pieces – Bach, Purcell, Bizet – and this is, admittedly, very specific pleasure.

"Brutal pop power" – so they call it. But there is a great temptation to also add other words: post-rock plus acoustic acid jazz with trip hop education – something like this, probably. However, all these names do not contradict each other – because music like this as it is means going beyond the limits of specific style...

...the silent poetry of the atmospheric, almost supernatural winds appeared against the background of clear, transparent rhythms and sometimes fluctuating, changeable bass and key lines. This music seems to pull into some mystic circle, however – it also tears, transforms it with sporadic emotional splashes, does not let it calm down melancholically, provokes attention.

It sounds as very delicate, intelligent combination of clear feelings and attentive reflections. All through the time while the disc sounds, one has the haunting feeling that the musicians realize themselves and the space around literally at every second – and are able to instantly react to its every motion, because they have inside a full degree of freedom and mastery.

...just before one's eyes. That is, when listening to, for example, the play "Two women who have not seen each other for a long time" – you will clearly see the women, and a small square where they met, the color of their hair and temperaments, will be able to discern the voice of each of them. Such expressiveness of performance really thrills.
