The ancient city of Kyiv was not only the birthplace of the Rus' principality but also the cradle of Christianity for the Slavic world. For centuries, thousands of Orthodox faithful wishing to cleanse their souls travelled as pilgrims to Kyiv to see its holy places and touch its holy relics. Throughout this time, hundreds of churches sprang up on the banks of the Dnipro River; they were sites of worship and, all too often, targets of destruction... Only a small number survived to our times, and regarding many only some small mention by contemporaries testifies to the fact of their erstwhile existence. As for the others, God Himself knows how many disappeared without a trace. The encyclopaedia includes information about 350 sacred buildings and complexes in Kyiv – Christian churches and monasteries – that exist or had existed since the early 10th century on the current territory of the city. In addition, the encyclopaedia materials include: 1600 illustrations, 17 overview articles, 20 maps and diagrams of the city from various times, about 3 hours of sacred music, 200 additional briefs.
