On August 24, 2015 Ukraine celebrates its 2nd birthday – because now it seems clear that the first 22 years of independence were only a transitory phase.
Is it a pity that so much time has been lost? Not true. A new generation has grown up, and another one is already born. Different in many ways. Though there are lots of us, and we are different.
The actual war – no matter how it is called – was imposed on Ukraine. It could never happen. But we allowed for it – us, ordinary people. We, who commonly believe that "it used to be better". It is not true. Previously – our parents would take care of us, now – we have become parents, we have undertaken the responsibility. That's all the difference, in fact.
Regardless of the language, education, religion, etc. we are humans. Only formally – if we live automatically. Truly human – when we explore ourselves. Not determine, not condemn or approve, but above all – just explore. Allow ourselves and others – to be. Including – to be different. And do not allow anyone to change us by force.
Ukraine seems to only now start exploring itself. It is difficult – but necessary. And without nurturing the culture – it is impossible.
That is the reason why UMKA – and hundreds of other resources focusing on the Ukrainian culture – keep working. That is why concerts take place, books and music are released, lectures are delivered, paintings and installations, as well as schools and social projects are created.
Do not be indifferent. Explore yourself.
And if this requires a dialogue, you should remember: buying books, music, and tickets is just normal, and this normality makes it possible for the culture – to be. To the utmost.
Bread and spectacle – those are important but not exhaustive needs. Unless one lives automatically.
Congratulations on the Independence Day.
Glory to Ukraine!
