"Sounds of Chernobyl" project

"Sounds of Chernobyl" album will unite Ukrainian and international musicians

In the previous year, best beatboxer of the world Dub FX had visited the Exclusion Zone and created a track from the sounds recorded in Chernobyl. Before him, it was done by Grammy Awards nominee Christophe Hetier from the French project Télépopmusik.

This year, the social musical project "Sounds of Chernobyl" goes to the new level and will publish a theme album of modern music. Aside from international musicians, it will take 6 Ukrainian artists, and young famous Ukrainian filmmakers will create clips of the tracks.

"Sounds of Chernobyl is modern rethinking of the infamous catastrophe by musicians who, in each composition, will tell stories of Chernobyl from a different point of view. Usage of sounds which we recorded in the Exclusion Zone will fill the sound with a unique atmosphere. The excursion will enable the musician to go deeper into the topic, enhance his/her emotional involvement, and find inspiration to create new compositions. During the art-residence, everyone is able to understand the history of the catastrophe, listen to the personal memories of the liquidators and displaced persons", says creative curator of the project Valeriy Korshunov.

First announced Ukrainian artist of the project became singer Stasik (Anastasiia Shevchenko) – medic-soldier at the front, and performance artist in creativeness.

On the previous week Anastasia visited the Exclusion Zone:

"Chernobyl fell into the blind spot of our sight. We are ready to give this land, these people, and this history to alienation, not to realize that Chernobyl is not the past, but our present, and what we, our children, grandchildren, and tens of generations will live with every day".

The project is implemented with the support of Lavina Concert and the Ukrainian Cultural Foundation and with the assistance of the State Agency of Ukraine on Exclusion Zone Management.

"The Exclusion Zone is a territory with many aspects. One of them is a place for acknowledgment, rethinking, and inspiration for creative people because you can see a realistic combination of past and present, as well as rethink its future in one place. The inspirational music project "Sounds of Chernobyl" will be successfully implemented and will find its listener," – said the Deputy Chairman of SAUEZM Maxim Shevchuk.

The unique sound of the future album will be made with the audio library "Sounds of Chernobyl", collection of sounds which musicians will use in their compositions to give them a distinct atmosphere of the Exclusion Zone. Among them are typical sounds: the crackle of the dosimeter, the squeak of the Ferris wheel, the noise of the Red Forest, echoes, the sound of the running water, technical sounds, which were recorded by the artists of the ARTEFACT project in 2018. Usage of those sounds will unite all the musicians' compositions for a future thematic album.

We are waiting for the new names and works of an extraordinary social music project that should have appeared a long time ago.
