In May 1998, the conductor Gunhard Mattes of Switzerland appeared at the International Cultural Festival in Lemberg/West Ukraine, where he, among other things, conducted the philharmonic with the Music Academy Orchestra in the festival’s final performance.
On this occasion, Mattes met many young, talented and highly motivated musicians who were forced to pursue their profession under extremely difficult conditions. The rental instruments available were barely playable and very few could afford to purchase their own. There were no rehearsal facilities and the musicians were forced to practice in stairwells and cellars, existing on stipendiums that were far from sufficient to live upon.
Highly impressed by the enthusiasm and amazing commitment of the musicians, Mattes decided to found an orchestra in Lemberg with the aim of selectively encouraging young talented musicians while enabling them to make a living. With the help of spontaneous donations from Swiss friends and acquaintances, and the generous financial support of the Gebauer Foundation, Mattes was able to acquire the instruments he needed to found the Lemberg Festival Orchestra. Over the years, fired with great idealism and unflagging commitment, Mattes consistently improved the technical and artistic level of the orchestra until he formed a topnotch body of sound comprised of 53 musicians. Today, the INSO Lemberg regularly performs as a young orchestra that exudes a healthy self-confidence while making the music it loves. The orchestra was invited to tour China at the beginning of 2005. Its many CD recordings have received great notice in the classical music industry.
The Executive Committee and its supporting advisory board in Zurich have been in charge of the skills of the INSO Lemberg since 2005.
