The "Stritennia" choir was created as a means of fostering the liturgical culture of the Ukrainian Catholic University (UCU). The choir was created in 1999. In the year 2000 on the feast of The Presentation of Our Lord in the Temple, the choir was "christened" with the name of the feast day - "Stritennia" which actually means "encounter". For our community encounter is the beginning of theological discourse and reflects its main principles and methods in responce to the needs of contemporary post-modern and post-totalitarian Ukrainian society. Volodymyr Ben' was asked to conduct the choir composed of the students, faculty and staff of UCU. From the onset the choir's main aim was to promote Eastern Christian liturgical tradition and unite this with the educational process. Nevertheless, the choir's repertoire is not limited to the works of the Eastern Christian tradition but includes works of the Latin rite, songs of the Taize community, and Ukrainian carols and folksongs. Alongside ancient sacred music, the choir performs works of contemporary composers.
