Borys Hmyrya. Ukrainian folk songs with accompaniment of the Capella of bandurists.

He was born in a pure family in which even bread was cut into thin slices with a thread. It happened to be that since childhood till death the course of his life was not easy notwithstanding even the world fame. But it was exactly in his childhood when his parents inculcated real and deep love to folk songs in him. You see, there are nearly 300 folk songs in his repertoire. This disc highlights the times when Borys Hmyrya, being already the Artist, performed with Kapella of Bandura players of Ukraine. As he himself used to say, the variety art presented Ukrainian folk songs too one-sidedly only facetious and everyday songs were performed. Now you will feel how the interweaving of his wonderful voice and the Kapella performance raise a Ukrainian song high up to the skies revealing peoples soul, his inspiration, tragedy and glory of his paths. You will feel that in folk songs this striving for the highest freedom merges with Borys Hmyryas voice and makes the space widen and the soul tremble. It seems that even walls widen by the force of this inner power.

Vitaliy Sobolev, Yevhenia Nesterenko. Mykola Lysenko: Works. /digi-pack/.

This disc was created on the eve of Mykola Lysenko's anniversary and, perhaps, it should be emphasized that it is work by young performers. And it is done well.

Fantastic! Borys Hmyrya ranks among the best artists in the world. He recorded the songs on this CD in 1957 at the height of his career. He sings with the Bandurists Chours of Kyiv. Every song is worth the price of the whole CD. My favorite is Vzav Bu Ya Banduru (If I were to take the Bandura I'd play what I know). I've heard many renditions of that song but no one equals Hmyrya and the Bandurists. Also, It was inspiring to hear Hmyrya's short narrative defending Ukraining Music, a brave thing to do in the 1950's during Soviet times.
