Marenych Trio. Vol.1.

Probably, I won’t be mistaken if I say that there are not that many Ukrainian collectives that by all means raise interest all through the last 30 years. "Trio Marenych" does raise it, at that the interest goes far beyond borders of Ukraine. Sure, that is not occasional. Here, one finds everything – simple and necessary. Acoustic sounding – pure guitar, the classical variant, that is soft sounding, nylon strings. And only from time to time a harmonic or a tambourine join, for example, but very selectively and in place. Soundings of voices is a separate theme, the harmony of the three voices in one can hardly be expressed in words. Therefore, it is really recommended to hear this harmony – due to it, both people, and all plants blossom, and everything grows alive in general. Well, and, finally, the texts – actually, you can hardly define aurally whether all of them are folk songs, or whether there are among them authors’ ones as well. Somehow all that is so tender and to the point. The very beauty of the Ukrainian language also plays its role here. To tell you the truth, it is easy to write beautiful texts in it, you only need to know what to write about. But that is already the issue of fullness of a human soul. Ukrainians’ soul is ok – we have enough songs, we could present others with tankers of them. And that is what the Marenyches are doing – for the joy of all of us.

This ensemble, which is actually a duet, performs the most popular Ukrainian folk songs. But – pay attention – an academic vocal performance sounds here. Anyone who remains unmoved when they listen to Keri Ochi, Chorni brovi is indeed made of steel. Your heart literally melts when you hear the exquisite blend of three effortless voices and simple musical accompaniment. The perfect match of voice with music has to be heard to be appreciated! Number 8 is another of my favourites with its utter simplicity, clarity yet depth of feeling and emotion. Marenych Trio, I salute you!

I was overwhelmed by the depth of feeling that this beautiful harmony and soul stirring melodies evoked. Such poignant but simple musical accompaniments with the mouth organ and acoustic guitars showed how heavenly voices can blend so effortlessly with instruments. Wish this trio did more!

I purchased the set of Trio Marynych. Both CD's have turned out to be among my very favourite ukrainian music. I especially like the first cut, Striletska. Cut 3, Kari Ochi, Chorni Brovi, always brings a bitterweet remembrance of my first and lost true love...Cut 13, if one listens hard, you can hear the Cranes flying by...a truly wonderful rendition.

It turns out that I had already purchased the first CD under the title, Tri Topoli...no matter, this will be a welcome gift to some lucky ukrainian friend...
