"In the mid-1950s, the last units of the armed underground troops in western Ukraine were eliminated. It seemed that the communist totalitarian regime obtained its final victory, and the Ukrainian liberation movement was destroyed. But the struggle, having taken on new forms, went on all over Ukraine. Daring individuals challenged the omnipotent system, the powerful repressive machine was opposed by the elusive "organization without organization". The armed actions were replaced with nonviolent resistance, actions to defend the culture and the church, 'samizdat', and advocacy work.
The transformation of the liberation movement in the late 20th century, its ideological evolution from culture-related requests to political objectives, activities of certain individuals and groups are presented by one of their active members. Ivan Hel offers on the pages of this book lots of unknown facts about the resistance movement and the repressive system's fight on it, unknown biographies of the participants. All of that has been restored through painstaking work of the historian with archival documents and witnesses. The book is a kind of a monument to the entire generation of those who dared to challenge the system and due to whose dignity it eventually collapsed..."
