"Czechoslovakia, a provincial town, the 1970's. The age of the so-called "normalization", as the contemporary communist regime officially referred to the Soviet occupation of 1968-89. The narrator – eight-year old Helenka, a lonely child with developed imagination – is learning to survive in the cruel and brutal world around her without losing herself. Her mother and stepfather are theatre actors, her Jewish grandmother died in World War II, and her father emigrated to the United States. Attacks on "elements hostile to socialism" start in the country, and Helenka's mother becomes one of their victims, ideological control and corruption penetrate into school and family, poison relationships, and maim people's lives. The world of Helenka's child interests is closely intertwined with these tragic realities of the adult life, which the girl naively interprets in her own way, so her story sometimes makes one laugh to tears, and sometimes it touches to tears."
