Once, the life of each of the characters got “Classified" due to efforts of the seemingly insurmountable security service. Today, historian Volodymyr Vyatrovych speaks about the past of Ukraine in the period of 1918-1991. Thus, in these pages the reader will once again play – with the heroes and traitors, those who believed they were controlling the events and those who thought they had no power over them – the almost century-old game of chess between the Ukrainian liberation movement and the creators of "the prison of nations". The cunning special operations, deadly moves, information warfare, and sophisticated parties for several players described here are an attempt to answer the question: what shapes our destiny – the human will or the circumstances?"
