Eurovision is, probably, the most famous variety song competition in the world, this year more than 100 million people all over the world were following the course of events. Could anyone seriously rely on that the Finns with their hard rock song and disguised as monsters will win in Athens? But they won, at that – triumphantly...

Generally speaking, the songs from 2005 were a vast improvement over the previous year. I'm sorry that viewers didn't take to Global Kryner, the wittiest and most charming act in the competition. Certainly a number of perfectly good songs didn't make the final (like Geir Rönning's), but I suppose that the Eurovision power ballad is dead. Long live Balkan disco. Obviously, Elena Paparizou did everything right: little yellow dress, big hair, danceable beat, confident vocals, some traditional instruments and a bit of Greek dancing for ethnic colour. Still, in purely musical terms No Name definitely had the best song. Douze points to them for making 7/8 time so catchy. Zdob şi Zdub showed integrity by being themselves and not impersonating anyone else. The only truly awful song came from Angelica Agurbash. Kudos to Greenjolly for doing the anti-Eurovision thing. And with so many acts drawing on their countries' traditional music and/or singing in their native languages, it's reassuring to see that after 50 years Eurovision has finally become European.

I wouldn't like to specify any song as being my favourite, but it was interesting that the songs with the most drumbeats made it into the Song Contest: I really do think there were some really good songs, like Irelands, that didn't make it into the contest. However, that was the contest, and this is the album of all the songs that made it into the Eurovision rounds. As an album it really showed the music styles across the vastly expanding Europe, and is an album really worth listening to.
