The full name of this disc looks like this: "Serhiy Zhadan and the Choir of Mongolian Militiamen. Gospels and Spirituals". And, in order to understand the title, you should read "Depeche Mode" – the book by that very Zhadan) Well, and right now it is quite sufficient to know that this disc is a collection of songs based on Zhadan's poems performed by various Ukrainian groups. "Various" is the key word here, because stylistically the songs represented here differ considerably. There is
"Luk" with cosmo-disco, and folk rock by
"Vertep", folk-chanson by
"Kalektsiya" (in this case very similar to
"Mandry"), ethno-lounge by
"Ojra", and just-rock performed by "More Sniv", and so on – the mosaics appear surprisingly interesting and bright. However, why marvel? – texts by Zhadan have always provoked multiple variations of methods of reading. And it is far not by chance that he has long already been one of the most popular authors in the Ukrainian, de facto, "non-format". His songs, as well as the songs based on them, can hardly be found broadcasted on the radio or TV – but, we believe, quite a lot of people know these texts by heart.. Which we wish to you as well – these poems truly deserve that. And music – nice music – is never superfluous either..
