Polis'kyj lirnyk. Ukrainian ethnic music.

There is some general impression of this entire story. A simple impression. Thank God, there still exist people on the earth who in contrast to most of us not only listen to songs. These are the people who sing. These are the people who make recordings.

The thing is that as far as I have understood this is the only audio recording of the last lyre player from Ukrainian Polissya. This recording was made in 1968 – 1969, when the equipment was far from being perfect (it was recorded at reel-type magnetic films). As you can understand, because of that the recording itself is not perfect either, but I think that this fact will not frighten or stop those who are really interested. After all, the material presented at this disc is unique. The tradition disappeared with the death of Ivan Vlasyuk, whose performance is recorded here. This is the way the things go. So, this disc gives us the only chance to hear how it really used to be. And whereas the repertoire of this performer is quite diverse, his performance is highly skilful and he knows the material well, this is a valuable present for all admirers and for those, who are looking for something interesting. Besides, the booklet contains a detailed and interesting information both on lyre playing in general and Ivan Vlasyuk in particular. It also contains the lyrics of all compositions recorded. I strongly recommend you to listen to this disc.

Pidlyashshya is a south-western region of Ukraine situated at the border, so naturally its culture is influenced by close neighbours – Belarus and Poland. In those parts along with usual songs you may also hear spiritual songs, Russian romances and songs, which once used to be Polish, but now have already become Ukrainian.

...when listening, you feel as if you were not exactly a listener. It looks as if you came to stay for some days, and the family turned out to be so sincere and so hospitable, that the hosts did not just receive and greet you as a guest, but also started to sing a song, moreover, not singly, but all together. So, you feel so warm, that you are reluctant to leave...

I am very happy to have this CD. I really think it is essential for any person with a serious interest in Ukrainian traditional music and culture. As described above, this is not a recording made in a studio with the latest equipment, but actually the sound is not too bad. Of course, less than perfect sound does not matter when you realize the importance of this recording that documents a tradition which has passed. The lyre is quite an interesting instrument. You can hear a modern recording of its sound on the Volodymyr Kushpet CD. The Polis'kyj Lirnyk CD also comes with extensive (bilingual) notes describing the lyrist tradition and the songs presented on the CD. I am very grateful to the people who have made this CD available ! I would love to see more archival field recordings made available in the future.
