Vasyl Melnykovych took a pseudonym Hutsul – hooligan. This choice was not made by chance as this nickname defines the main features of what he does. On one hand, his songs are based on Ukrainian folklore, or to be more precise - on the Carpathian folklore. Thus, a lot of melodies sound like hutsul kolomyykas (folk songs). On the other hand, he’s a real hooligan as the content of his songs is very close to the content of kolomyykas, which at all times were famous for their sharp words, wit and jibes. Here, the texts are significantly modernized and this means that different episodes of our life, from sexual to political, are revealed. Mentioned topics are actually the leitmotifs. Besides, as Hutsul – hooligan is not a shy-boy, we find in his songs quite good caustic remarks towards our everyday life. Sometimes you cannot even distinguish between jokes and truth, because life often creates unpredictable or even grotesque situations. Vasyl Melnykovych knows how to notice all these things, so maybe that is why he is so popular.
