As noted at the publishing house, this booklet is, to some extent, a summary of the materials that in a much greater detail are presented in the volume "The Great War of 1914-1918 and Ukraine" – therefore, it may be a kind of "a guide and a tester" of the said publication.
"The book contains materials that highlight the "Ukrainian issue" during the largest armed conflict in the history of the human civilization – the First World War of 1914-1918. The specific tragedy of this conflict for Ukraine is Ukrainian's simultaneous participation on the sides of each of the warring blocs of states – the Quadruple Alliance and the Entente. The Great War, with all of its grave consequences, opened an extensive space for implementation of Ukrainian state-building projects, but there was no space for the sovereign Ukraine in plans of the victorious states. The Ukrainian people remained divided among several states generated by the war, revolutions, and the will of the contemporary world leaders."
