"Mykola Dyletskyi is the most eminent figure in Slavic music of the second half of the 17^th cent. His work, to a large extent, determined the development of music on a territory which covered Eastern Europe and laid the foundations for a composition school of the New Times... From the end of 1670's Dyletskyi worked in Moscow. He entered the intellectual circle which united representatives of the new artistic intelligentsia of Eastern Europe. Dyletskyi was the first in Eastern Europe to write a theoretical treatise "The Grammar of Music". According to European musicologists of the time, Dyletskyi expounded the principals of music theory, composition, aesthetics, rhetoric and laid the theoretical foundation for the New Style – so called "partesnyi" which replaced the long-lived reign of the church monody.
