Ivan Kotlyarevsky is named the founder of new Ukrainian literature. Not for nothing. Presumably, as in Russia everybody knows Ivan Krylov’s fables, so in Ukraine everybody knows "Aeneid" by Ivan Kotlyarevsky. Not by heart, certainly, – but everyone is able to remember a few lines, maybe. As well as the basic peripetias and character features of the work. And that is not surprising. People always memorize things that surprise and cheer them. "Aeneid" does the both things in full. There is a serious basis – mythology already several thousand years old. And a considerable surprise – because, you should agree, the author offers an unusual, bold look both at classic plots, and at the whole literature in general. To say nothing about the human nature – Kotlyarevsky ridicules its flaws mercilessly, brightly, without compromising, but – justly, there is no doubt about this. As there can be no doubt about modern actuality of this work – unfortunately, during the last two hundred years people have not decreased the list of their own drawbacks considerably. That’s how it happens that both in the eighteenth, and in the twenty-first centuries "Aeneid" appears as high-quality, deep and talented satire. Which causes a lot of laughter – but not less reflection either.
