"The book tells us about the hardly known and controversial phenomenon of 1917-1918 – Free Cossacks – a kind of a militarized Ukrainian civil society organization that arose and was massively spread primarily among peasants. On the basis of documents discovered in archives, an extensive range of published sources, the causes and features of appearance of the Free Cossacks movement are described in detail, a comprehensive analysis of Free Cossacks troops is highlighted, in particular their activity during the period of the military and political conflict between the Central Rada and Radnarcom (the Council of People's Commissioners) of RSFRR (December 1917 – March 1918) and the peasant rebellion movement in the summer of 1918.The research field conditioned consideration of a number of actual issues closely related to the history of Free Cossacks – the features of the "Cossacks myth" formation in the time of the "national revival", the military and agricultural policy during the Central Rada and Hetmanat, kinship of the Free Cossacks movement of 1917-1918 and the otamanery of 1919-1920, activity of emigration "heirs" of Free Cossacks in 1920 – 1930, and so on.
Lots of the documents published in the annex are introduced into the research field for the first time. The book is intended for scholars, teachers, students and all those interested in the history of Ukraine and the Ukrainian peasantry."
