Ivan Kozlovs'kyj. Chorni brovy, kari ochi. Ukrainian folk songs. P.2. | | Track Reviews (2) |
|
|
Ivan Kozlovs'ky was known and is known, clearly, not only in Ukraine – and, finally, it is not only Ukrainian songs that he sang, eventually. But, in any case, we have now the opportunity to listen to as much as two discs, almost two and a half hours, of Ukrainian songs performed by him. However, not only folk songs – there are here, in the second part, some opera pieces as well. And the feeling of traveling in time is guaranteed for you. It is clear that the records are old, in part restored – it is easy to feel the atmosphere of the times that passed long ago. And it is nice and interesting to feel it. Somewhere an old plate starts rustling, somewhere applauses in a concert hall sound as in very old documentaries. And you will not notice as you get transferred in another dimension, another way of reality perception. Let alone the very voice of Ivan Kozlovs'ky, this wonderful instrument. Open, gentle, transparent – maybe, you know quite well what it was like. And it remains like this – while we can listen to the records. Taking into account the reality of its beauty, I think that this voice will still remain with us long enough – for satisfaction of the many fans of simple refinement.
Archival recordings are presented on this CD. Their quality do not always meet modern standards.

Audio cassette/ ..His singing was appreciated even in those countries which he did not visit in his life. At his concerts people applauded with tears in their eyes. It would be easier to count the halls in which he was not invited to perform than the halls in which he was invited to perform..

Audio cassette/ ..As he himself used to say, the variety art presented Ukrainian folk songs too one-sidedly – only facetious and everyday songs were performed. Now you will feel how the interweaving of his wonderful voice and the Kapella performance raise a Ukrainian song high up to the skies revealing people’s soul..

..the entire album is recorded based on poems by Taras Shevchenko. It is unlikely that for many his poetry conjures purely lyrical images – but the music leaves you no chance. Even dramatic, heavy lines are revealed in a different light here, because the music permeates them with – peace.

This disc was created on the eve of Mykola Lysenko's anniversary – and, perhaps, it should be emphasized that it is work by young performers. It's nice – both because they have managed to record and release this program, and because they chose him – Lysenko. Let us just keep it in mind that one can talk about it, or one can – do it. And it is done – well.

It's nice that now within the framework of the "Golden Collection" it is possible to hear at least a small portion of truly exciting opera recordings. And, as is often the case with collections of this series, the disc contains real rarities: the oldest recording presented here was made back in 1940!

In the repertoire of B. Hmyrya, there are more than 100 pieces by foreign composers. Among them, opera parties – 10, arias – 21, romances – 67 and a few folk songs. Mykola Shopsha has a bass of a great beauty and force. A number of modern Ukrainian composers – as, for example, Yevgen Stankovych – write some oeuvres especially for him, taking into account the force and range of this voice. A serious proof of respect, isn’t it?

An OK CD but not one of my favorites. Too much sliding of note/phrases and some tracks are speaking, not singing. Perhaps if I understood Ukrainian I would enjoy the spoken tracks which appear to have much feeling. I would not buy another CD of this artist.

Kozlovs'kyj is undoubtedly the best tenor Ukraine ever had. He's exceptional when he sings in other languages as well. Few can measure up to his standards. In this CD all his songs are in Ukrainian. He sings folk songs, Melodic Ukrainian Opera areas and most notably Ukrainian Christmas Carols. Any CD technical shortcomings are far outweighed by Koslovs’kyj’s outstanding performance. The Christmas Carols alone are worth more than the price of the CD. Koslovs’kyj and mixed choir accompanied by a symphony orchestra sing Koladky (Carols). Most notably the recordings were made in Soviet times. Koslovs’kyj bravely defended the Ukrainian language, customs and traditions, especially in his superb rendition of Dobryj Vechir, where he honors the independence and self reliance of the hospodar(landowner and proprietor). At Christamas time I'll be playing the Koladky over and over again.
