On the one hand, "Make up" is a soundtrack to a theatrical performance of the same name, a kind of "a voice from the shadows", and on the other it is a completely independent work of art. And here such apparent duality is essential in the sense that it creates additional volume, thereby contributing to perception of the conditional fragmentation as a holistic picture. Dakh Daughters have taken a step forward, being able to synthesize their previous experience here the sharpness of the first album and the balance of the second one have come together, and as a result we have got a rich space of mystery and confession. Bright and dark, remote and passionate, corporeal and abstract at the same time this is the experience of living in the here-and-now moment with the parallel unfolding of layers of memory. Both personal memory and memory as a cultural function in the general sense. And it seems that starting from a certain point you don't even listen to the music, intonations, lyrics, you rather stare/listen into what is behind them, on the other side of this space. And you can discover there something bigger, deeper, truer than expected. After all, there is always something beyond any guise, and "Make up" is a wonderful, very vivid reminder of this. Anton Yozhyk Leyba (Hedgehog)

Love to simple beauty that is, probably, what in due time conditioned emergence of the "Retroskop" band. And it should be noted that their liking for the music of the 1950s-60s was noticeable not only in performance of "classics of the genre"...

"I consider that the "retro" style, in which the album "Dahlia" is performed, is elegant Oleh Skrypka says. This album is a phenomenon in the modern Ukrainian music. Here we have, first, interpretation of the European classics in the Latin American vein, which they definitely have not tried here so far. And, second not only the music, but also the vocal manner has been reconsidered. Radically..

The concert performance it is different, and not only due to presence of a new song. The sound, nuances of arrangements, team of musicians but, above all the energy. And this is the case when, even while just listening to the recording, you experience a kind of happening not least due to Jamala's affection for gospel.

The new album by Boombox is another very significant reason to mention the year 2011 as one of the most yielding years for the non-ordinary Ukrainian popular music. No doubt despite the title, "Middle Age", no crisis is in question here. On the contrary.

Jamala and the debut album illustrates this very nicely creates light music in the best Western tradition. And not just coolly at a high quality level. Fortunately, sometimes you run across the albums about which it is very difficult to say anything because you just frankly like them. Because, in spite of external simplicity, they contain so many ideas, various subtleties one's ears just go astray..) Because the music tells you stories without words, while the words tell you stories full to the brims with music..

It would seem just vocal and the piano. But this only verbally looks rather ascetic in actual fact, a surprisingly powerful emotional current lives inside there. Actually, the way the voice and the piano sound makes Hanna Brizhata, aka Anniebri, a truly unordinary phenomenon on our scene. Honestly speaking, I can hardly think about a single Ukrainian album resembling "Lo-Fi Feeling"...

..a studio album is a different story, it offers an opportunity to hear, not to see: music balancing on the brink of theater. Due to the art of intonation, which sometimes reaches its extreme and takes a step further but also due to the art of silence, which only rarely acts as a pause, taking a breath, but mostly it keeps producing supplementary senses.

This album was ready in the autumn of 2016 but the musicians were in doubt, as a result they literally re-created it from scratch (the sound producer was Yuryi Hustochka). And it turned out superb, literally. Fragile like the frosty crust on morning snow, thick and fragrant like masala an album of hope, an album of surprise. Steppe blues..

In its previous album "Pokosy", ShockolaD stepped away from jazz for an almost safe distance the key definition of the work would be "ethno-lounge". Well, and this time the group seems to have decided to remix all familiar ingredients both the ethno, and jazz, and acoustic lounge and, sure, to season it with a few new colors.

Belarus bands famous here are specific in their artistic, nonlinear attitude to arrangements, self-irony and they are somehow particularly enlightened, I guess. When one listens to them sometimes it seems that they are singing the anthem of the Sun, facing the dark wall of the ancient forest. And Vuraj in this regard is no exception.

Taking the Carpathian and Polissya folklore as a basis, PoliKarp modernizes it very carefully the key melody and, actually, the manner of singing remain unchanged. While speaking about rhythmic structures and additional melody lines here already musicians release their fantasy. And that is why in their music it is possible to hear impacts of outright rock, and jazz, and funk, and dub..

First I listened to the Ojras records somewhere at the end of 90-ties, yet then it was the attempt to join the archaic and the up-to-date. The staff of the group changed several times since then, and they didnt give up to search. Of course, a variety of creative paths they made gave its outcome: one of the best, I think, neo-folk records of all Ukrainian discography of the recent years.

From ballads to dance, from folklore through art rock to meditation and jazz I would call this world fusion, as a lot of roots from the whole world have intertwined here. The album "Valley of Muses" is, in fact, a Ukrainian project in the domain of world music at that, presumably, virtually the first one in Ukraine. It is strange and nice to hear how organically there sound together, for example, the lyre, the deeply Ukrainian violin, and the Indian percussion. Or the mandolin with the drymba why not a couple?
