"The new work by Petro Kraliuk is an attempt at the author's exploration of Gogol's controversial story "Taras Bulba" in terms of the role of the text in the cultural and political discourse in the nineteenth century, in the time of the Romanticism, and in modern times. The researcher analyses the place of "Taras Bulba" within different coordinate systems: the imperial Russian, the provincial Little Russian, Polish, Jewish, etc. He expresses bold assumptions about Gogol's own biography. He poses a number of questions about internal intention of the author of the story, the scrupulous textual analysis sometimes leads to contradictory conclusions – however, it is in this ambiguity that one can see the depth and vitality of Gogol's work.
