Yuri Shepeta Quintet. We Will Meet Again. Tribute to Bill Evans. | | Track Reviews (0) |
|
|
"...Yuri Shepeta Quintet played this program many times, but the most outstanding and the best remembered has been their premier, which is presented in this album. The spirit of Bill Evans is present in every composition of the album, plus there is an interesting synthesis in "We Will Meet Again": at the beginning of the album Evans starts and Shepeta picks up towards the end, and at the end of the album Yuri starts rendering the right to play the final phrase to Bill. We have met again with the music of a fine and stylish artist of whom Keith Jarrett said rightly and concisely: "I don't know what would become of the new generation of jazz pianists if there were no Bill Evans"." Alex Kogan Yuri Shepeta - keyboards, Fender Rhodes piano, all arragements Vitaliy Ivanov - alto & tenor saxes Serhiy Ovsianikov - guitar Max Hladetsky - acoustic bass Serhiy Tabunschyk - drums

Some of the authors that you'll encounter here are Morgan, McCartney, Bogolyubov, etc. hence, that's a crossing of quite diverse time, country, and style lines. What that sounds like: as if the boundaries in space and time do not exist. Well, as it should be, actually. Coherence, skills of the quintet are at the highest level, and the new album is another confirmation of that.

The wonderful team Cherkasy Jazz Quintet by Serhiy Krasheninnikov celebrate their 10th anniversary in 2014. "Return Music To Me" is their seventh album already. The pieces recorded on this disc are, to put it mildly, unusual for a classical (by composition) jazz quintet, which is also an adept of the traditional hard bop...

Jazz music, by definition being in a permanent creative quest, at the same time possesses surprising tolerance and is not afraid to look back... The music represented on this disc suggests that we rewind the tape of history for about 50 (and more) years back and plunge in the times when (wonder!) music instruments were still the key transmitters and sources of music.

Thus thirteen LP albums by "The Beatles", one song from each. Something is closer to the original, something is farther: jazz is music that is free in its creative search and discoveries. Let us hope that this new CD by Cherkasy Jazz Quintet will turn to be a nice present both for fans of "The Beatles", and for fans of jazz...

...a true galaxy of musicians with modern thinking, unique vision of the musical space, and an excellent technique. Actually, already the debut album by Oleh Pashkovsky is a good example of how interesting, thoughtful, versatile the young improvisational music in Ukraine can be.

This is the third album in the official discography of Er.J.Orchestra. And I really hope that it will be not a stop, not completion of the trilogy, but one of the many pearls on the thread. Such music simply must be incarnated, sound, fill the space at least because honest beauty, dignity, authenticity live in it...

Three musicians with huge experience recorded something transparent, subtle, and humanly simple something that majority of young ones could not do. Just because there is simplicity which can be saturated, to which you come through hundreds of melodies and thousands of hours of rehearsals and performances.

Volodymyr obviously enjoys this music and does prevent his colleagues from doing the same) Quietly, nicely, confidently and in the best sense of it modestly. One can say this far not about any album: this time the musicians came together exactly for the sake of the music-as-the-state..

All the musicians appear in some new, specific and delicate light - and, I believe, this is a merit of Lebedeva as a composer. It is not by chance that Igor Zakus at the beginning of the evening referred to her music as very female one... Expressive and soft, caring; elegant, distinct and, at the same time, very emotional, open to intercourse; sometimes anxious and very lyrical...

This kind of 3D, really composer's vision in jazz is encountered far not every day and certainly comes into notice. It thrills and inspires some, with some it causes protest but, as a rule, does not leave indifferent. Because when a feeling stands behind music supported by a developed thought...

It either laughs or winks wilily or sounds with such pensive tenderness, such forgivene... There is the beauty of every minute, which does not depend on the past or the future, which is just now, and for this reason always.

From the first seconds, the album tunes one into attentive perception even if you have never before heard Olexiy Bogolyubov. And if you have already had the chance, it will a priori be interesting to listen. Internal harmony, balance both of each play and of the disc as a whole pleasantly delights. "My "Cool & Crazy" World" is a beautiful, diversified work, in which Bogolyubov demonstrated himself well both as the performer, and as the composer.

Strange: although you could hardly characterize the album as quiet, unemotional it leaves the feeling of tranquility...the heart and mind sound equal, do not argue, search for harmonious interlacing. And discover it not only in sounds, in the whole atmosphere.

..these are anyway not flashes or explosions, but light fog, hints, mid-tones, mid-shades.. Heat and cool interweave here rather whimsically one only needs to make a little step aside to be inside, in the heart of the music, and for it to appear in one's heart.

As the title promises, the album has turned out quite strange but in a good sense. This is the strangeness that can only be afforded by good, versatile musicians otherwise, originality may easily turn into farce, showing off. This did not happen here one virtually feels with one's skin in what a thin, delicate way all of that is compiled.

On the one hand, there seems no be nothing superfluous even Aleksandrov, oddly enough, has not added too much pepper, even though he knows how to do it at the level of "excellent". And on the other the organism works so smoothly, without failures, that the entire album literary flies at one breath...

"Fever" is a studio work. So, on the one hand, there is no living "breathing of the audience", the proper concert experience. But on the other there is no room for concerns, everything is polished to shine (although, I must say, at concerts the quartet also sounds so smoothly that sometimes it seems almost unbelievable)...

"Swing Cocktail" is a present for all those who love the emotions of "live" recordings and, respectively, concert features of performance of evergreens. Moreover, this time the purely saxophone composition has been expanded on the album, you will have a chance to hear the clarinet, piano, bass, and drums. They do not sound in every piece in this case, these are rather spices.

The album is a collection of concert recordings and here, you will find not only jazz evergreens performed by the saxophone quartet, which would be quite natural. As evident from the title "Classics & Jazz", half of the album is composed of classical pieces Bach, Purcell, Bizet and this is, admittedly, very specific pleasure.

"Brutal pop power" so they call it. But there is a great temptation to also add other words: post-rock plus acoustic acid jazz with trip hop education something like this, probably. However, all these names do not contradict each other because music like this as it is means going beyond the limits of specific style...

...the silent poetry of the atmospheric, almost supernatural winds appeared against the background of clear, transparent rhythms and sometimes fluctuating, changeable bass and key lines. This music seems to pull into some mystic circle, however it also tears, transforms it with sporadic emotional splashes, does not let it calm down melancholically, provokes attention.

It sounds as very delicate, intelligent combination of clear feelings and attentive reflections. All through the time while the disc sounds, one has the haunting feeling that the musicians realize themselves and the space around literally at every second and are able to instantly react to its every motion, because they have inside a full degree of freedom and mastery.

...just before one's eyes. That is, when listening to, for example, the play "Two women who have not seen each other for a long time" you will clearly see the women, and a small square where they met, the color of their hair and temperaments, will be able to discern the voice of each of them.
