This publication is, in fact, a little book in hardcover with the preface of cultural studies, nine translated texts (three Icelandic, Portuguese, Scottish, Chinese, Italian folk songs, and a Ukrainian folk song and Shevchenko's "Testament" translated into German), and notes to them. Plus a CD, of course. Nicely designed, quality production – pleasant to hold, pleasant to present. And it should be presented, because it is, after all, a really cool, outstanding, ingenious album. Not just an album. A small chest of treasures. An attempt of 100 years ago to tell ordinary Ukrainian about the world, who had not seen that world – to tell about it so that those strange songs became a little bit native, close, and through them the world would become closer as well. An attempt to show that there are local characters everywhere – and yet they are similar, wherever they sing about them. And then – the German language translations, to tell the world about Ukrainians.. And – 100 years later – the extraordinary musical presentation of this attempt by Franko. Especially with the recognizable color tones characteristic of a particular nation – but also with the HYCh's skill of imbuing them with purely Ukrainian patterns, and at the same time of creatively designing the themes so that to blur boundaries, to reach the universal. That is, to do in music everything that Franko did in the lyrics. Freely but carefully. To afford a brief grotesque caricature on one occasion, or to make it so that an essentially simple song grew into a small suite – on another, or to subtly mix pathos and irony.. HYCh Orchestra expresses itself very succinctly – and very nicely. Listen..

Svyatoslav Vakarchuk's third solo project is an expected change in tonlity, The Orangery builds up a space to approximate comfort. Approximate – because there are enough disturbing notes, but they do not set the key mood. Basically, it seems – it is about the desire to speak so quietly that one could get as close as possible..

..One can simply enjoy the concise arrangements with colorful spices. Or one can discover in these melodies, intonations, and pauses styling on the verge of grotesque. Or – one can hear stories that it is impossible to tell in any other way than this. Sentimental and ironic. And ask: why?

..it is absence of didacticism in the lyrics and of any mention of magic, as opposed to the skill of noticing the details that make up the everyday life – but noticing in a way that the listener slightly shifts the "assembly point". The reality's magic is routine, this is what one can hear and feel here at full force.

This is music with its own identity. And it's not only about interesting arrangements – listen to the lyrics: this is not simulation of rural folklore, this is its urban rethinking, but not limited to the city. Somewhere there, a universal key to the roots reside...

It was planned that this disc would only be sold at concerts, but now "Freakish Power" can encounter us anywhere and anytime, and this is – incredibly good. Another fragrant brick for Podillya foundation... I sincerely advise you to cast away umbrellas and the rest of protection means – otherwise there is the risk of just failing to contain.

11 tracks, but they are somehow so saturated and diverse that it may seem there are twice more of them. First, there are both author's and folk texts there – and some author's ones really resemble folk songs, this is a compliment.. And second – within one album, actually, three manners and ways of performing are mixed: skilful "folk" singing, powerful ethno-rock and the "acoustics"..

I would not like to speak here in a lot of detail about the ability to combine the green with the hot, and the fretted with the tart – these specific features have acquired even more expressive outlines from the times of the debut disc. Propala Hramota boldly creates modern folklore – do not be too lazy to listen to the lyrics, this is a really important decoration of every song.

Here it is – real, serious, exact. You know, about such dicks one is both eager and reluctant to speak – they bend to one's soul with their curves so that words become almost superfluous. But it is also desirable to keep quiet about such things only eye-to-eye, in order to by all means share one's feeling, warmth, acceptance.

The group offers to us radiant, expressive pictures. They masterfully implement the style eclecticism in the music line – it became the background for poetry both varied and transparent. Moreover, the whole album is penetrated with kind humor.

(this edition is an exclusive thing, and you cannot buy it. But you can get it as a present). – Vasyl Stus, a poet and citizen, belongs to the cohort of daredevils who disagreed with the conventional: one soldier does not make a battle. With all his struggle-of-life, struggle-of-art, Stus and his stubborn like-minders proved the opposite..

..this is why the album has turned out very easily presented. With the unobtrusive simplicity that knows how to avoid primitivism. Due to this, the lyrics do not get lost in the arrangements – which also matters, because a lot of truly cool, and sometimes – already classical – poems were set to music here.

..and one can hear here verses by Stus, Sosyura, Ukrainka, Lysheha, Shevchenko – just listen how up-to-date the lines written by these people in the seemingly different epochs sound. Although in some general sense, they belong to the same epoch – that of self-realization. "Hit that rock"...

It, sure, happens differently to everyone. Oksana Zabuzhko's poetry is what I, for example, have not read till now, but now – I will definitely go on reading it. Why? Because this recording simply and clearly creates a good impression – and causes the desire to meet again, to find out more. Because having listened to the disc, you get, so to say, a complex pleasure...

..the whole album is devoted to writings by Lina Kostenko. And one does not even want to say how much beauty, love, pain, intelligence, passion, contemplation are there in her poems.. Yes, all of this is there. But the main thing is that they are – extremely honest. And it is honesty that is able to make these beauty, pain, love, understanding – significant, deep, perceptible and important for others. For us.

"Measure" is not just a new album by Iryna Shynkaruk. Actually, this is not even an album in the ordinary sense of the word, it's something different. The singer says that this project currently does not have analogues in Ukraine – and, as far as we know, it does not indeed. Although, it would seem, the idea is extraordinarily simple and obvious..

This album is really like an explosion, about which you suddenly understand that it is not so much an explosion outside, but most likely an explosion inside. When you look through the window, it moves away. When you knock on the door, it moves near. When you pass by, it is over.
