DakhaBrakha, Port Mone. Khmeleva project. (exclusive edition). /eco-pack/. | | Track Reviews (2) |
|
|
"DakhaBrakha" and "Port Mone" are among the brightest and most famous representatives of art-house music of Ukraine and Belarus, respectively. Each of these groups has already become a sort of a cultural brand not only at home – so, the fact of their joint experiment already seemed a positive thing. And it seems – not mistakenly. Similar to the previous "Light" by DakhaBrakha, the album "Khmeleva Project" cannot be subject to a particular stylistic definition – it is a strange mix, in which the ethnic plays a bright, but not the main part. In fact, it seems that the project has turned out very a interesting reconsideration of classical music – or rather, not even classical but medieval one, from which classical music later developed. Actually, this is like a fantasy on the theme of what classical and pop music could transform into if a few centuries ago Europeans followed some other path in terms of music performance. A parallel, alternative world, where the magic of sound is not bracketed off by the ratio. And, therefore, it is not about access to the dimension of abstract ideas as a goal in itself. In this case, music is as a method to transport the consciousness deep into the multidimensional environment, in which abstract ideas and empirical evidence are only components, and far not the only ones, of something much greater – for example, of Adam Kadmon. Music as direct, immediate magic, which soaks and links different arms-manifestations of the unique in its diversity of the time and space. Anton Yozhyk Leyba (Hedgehog)

..the album is not free improvisation for keyboards, but – a space of co-creation in the ethno-jazz spirit. Space so deep, versatile – there is enough magic of rhythms, and magic of silence, not to mention the fact that Oorzhak's throat singing inevitably adds very characteristic colors.

..the fact that a Kyivite turns to Lemkian songs is unexpected and interesting. The musicians are very caution about the authentic material, they do not shutter the songs’ architecture. Instead, they delicately unwrap and decorate the main lines, having arrived in their arrangements at a certain common denominator for the generally diverse plays..

..the circle is closed for them to reach something new: from the initial composition, only Anastasia Litvinyuk and Ihor Hnydyn have stayed, the rest of the lines are within responsibility of our Polish brethren led by Ewa Novel. And somehow quite expectedly the band's music has regained its distinct ethno-jazz colors, stepping aside from the previous lounge rails.

The recording is luxurious – perhaps, one could hardy put it in other words. This is something that so far we have not had: a vocal and instrumental album of Ukrainian folk songs at the intersection of jazz, chamber and symphonic, variety art music (such as, for example, songs by Frank Sinatra or Astrud Gilberto)...

This is the third album in the official discography of Er.J.Orchestra. And I really hope that it will be not a stop, not completion of the trilogy, but one of the many pearls on the thread. Such music simply must be incarnated, sound, fill the space – at least because honest beauty, dignity, authenticity live in it...

Very transparent, juicy, quiet and confident and yet full of irrepressible life – this is what this work appears like. Stylistically, it continues the trend including the albums "Black" and "Red" – the pure jazz-rock line, with no direct immersions into the lounge or symphonicity. But in a much softer, tender version.

To enrich them with modern colors without destroying the subtle paths of the light joy inherent in Christmas carols and shchedrivkas – which is not an easy task. Since it requires great attention and tolerance. Finally, it just requires love for this music, for the roots – and love that is creative. And it seems – they have succeeded.

Victor Solomin is virtually the only jazz domra-player in Ukraine, therefore the both of his ethno-jazz projects – "SolominBand" and "DomRa" – have here no immediate analogues just by definition. Besides, "DomRa" can boast two key instruments at once: those are the domra and the vocal, and it is they that provide the "ethnic component" of the sounding here.

...each of them separately does not really have almost anything too sophisticated, to say nothing about the superfluous – but these transparent lines interlace so pointedly and charmingly, that an indescribably rich matter of light appears. In the case of Er.J.Orchestra, it is not only about concert improvisations – the issue is discovery and creation of old-new worlds, no less.

ShockolaD again combines Ukrainian folklore with improvisational music, and the ethnic component, as well as before, is strong and expressive – but this time the group represents fusion that literally borders on world music. In other words, in our view, this is soft music understandable for a very wide public – which, nevertheless, remains pleasantly intelligent, delicate.

"Kolomyikas" is a good album with bright pieces that are able to capture the audience as it is, even without associations with the material it derives from. In the end, there was no "weak link" in the team of the album’s creators. That is, probably, the reason why, without regard to the intense structure, there is within the music fabric – freedom, which makes it possible to breathe deeply.

...the album at once creates elated, festive mood – but in a surprising way. In the correct way. Because, although about a half of the compositions can hardly be called merry ones – a smile is very expressly felt in them. Somewhere dim, somewhere transparent, somewhere dreamy, somewhere thoughtful – but it is present in each piece, and it warms.

It seems to me that none who has at least once heard performance by Motion Trio – and the more so none who has seen it – will ever forget, mix it up with anybody. And the thing is not only original composition – although you will hardly find among performers of jazz, art rock, folk fusion another trio what would consist exceptionally of accordions.

..a studio album is a different story, it offers an opportunity to hear, not to see: music balancing on the brink of theater. Due to the art of intonation, which sometimes reaches its extreme and takes a step further – but also due to the art of silence, which only rarely acts as a pause, taking a breath, but mostly it keeps producing supplementary senses.

An album that's a joke, a discovery, a surprise, a challenge – combining the folk music of the Carpathians with the North American folk. LBB have danced that subtly but stoutly: monologues about dialogues of cultures are not really needed when you have such illustrations at hand..

This album was ready in the autumn of 2016 – but the musicians were in doubt, as a result they literally re-created it from scratch (the sound producer was Yuryi Hustochka). And it turned out – superb, literally. Fragile like the frosty crust on morning snow, thick and fragrant like masala – an album of hope, an album of surprise. Steppe blues..

In its previous album "Pokosy", ShockolaD stepped away from jazz for an almost safe distance – the key definition of the work would be "ethno-lounge". Well, and this time the group seems to have decided to remix all familiar ingredients – both the ethno, and jazz, and acoustic lounge – and, sure, to season it with a few new colors.

Belarus bands famous here are specific in their artistic, nonlinear attitude to arrangements, self-irony and – they are somehow particularly enlightened, I guess. When one listens to them – sometimes it seems that they are singing the anthem of the Sun, facing the dark wall of the ancient forest. And Vuraj in this regard is no exception.

...the album "Free" resembles that very puzzle, an element of mosaics that was lacking in order that the picture became integral, completed. ..what is specific: the core of the Ukrainian archaic material is not hidden, not disguised as it could be and as it has already happened. The album "Duet" is a combination of not only two voices. This is synthesis of two very different manners of performance, schools, music styles, and aesthetics. Since Taras Zhytynsky is a rock singer, and Iryna Zhytynska is an opera singer (mezzo-soprano), a soloist of Wroclaw Opera House...

...the content of the album in the style aspect is ambiguous – but, definitely, interesting. This time to their branded ethno-chaos they have added quite a bit of very diverse elements: here you have soul, and D'n'B, and hip-hop, and art-rock, and almost jazz decorations. It appears cool.

Is the studio version different from the concert one? No doubt. Without disclosing all secrets, it is enough to say that it remains up to date to go beyond one language and one culture. Taking the Carpathian and Polissya folklore as a basis, PoliKarp modernizes it very carefully – the key melody and, actually, the manner of singing remain unchanged. While speaking about rhythmic structures and additional melody lines – here already musicians release their fantasy. And that is why in their music it is possible to hear impacts of outright rock, and jazz, and funk, and dub..

First I listened to the Ojra’s records somewhere at the end of 90-ties, yet then it was the attempt to join the archaic and the up-to-date. The staff of the group changed several times since then, and they didn’t give up to search. Of course, a variety of creative paths they made gave its outcome: one of the best, I think, neo-folk records of all Ukrainian discography of the recent years.

..here, "On the Verge" – the force of water is revealed very perceptibly, magic of quite a different level appears, intended for other purposes. That is, the first works were just to burn everything old, not able to live on – to clear the space. The new work – must feed the new, fresh relying on those roots that did not subdue to the action of fire. That verge from which creation of the new myth..

From ballads to dance, from folklore through art rock to meditation and jazz – I would call this world fusion, as a lot of roots from the whole world have intertwined here. The album "Valley of Muses" is, in fact, a Ukrainian project in the domain of world music – at that, presumably, virtually the first one in Ukraine. It is strange and nice to hear how organically there sound together, for example, the lyre, the deeply Ukrainian violin, – and the Indian percussion. Or the mandolin with the drymba – why not a couple?

This album is not, in my opinion, as good as most of the previous DakhaBrakha albums. I think this is primarily because the inclusion of Port Mone to the mix has lead to a 'fuller' sound which is less 'edgy' and more middle of the road. There may also be an element of familiarity creeping in, in that the basic sounds of DakhaBrakha have not developed significantly from 'Light',other than the previously mentioned 'rounding' of the sharp edges. Given that it was those sharp edges which primarily attracted me to DakhaBrakha, this is a loss from my perspective. Nonetheless, this is still much better music than most of what is produced elsewhere in the world.
