"Every Ukrainian knows the artist of the word, Boris Hrinchenko, as the author of one of the best dictionaries of the Ukrainian language, the writer whose masterful hand created the lace of brilliant pearls of Ukrainian realistic poetry and prose. His creative work started in the 19
th century, the difficult time for the Ukrainian language, which was barely breathing under the pressure of moscowization, the repressive language policy of the today's neighbor. In his short, bright stories, Hrinchenko pictures the fate of a Ukrainian through the latter's endured routine passed in hard work "for a slice of bread", through famine and lawlessness, in painful lines without eyewitness' decorations. These are pictures of poverty, despair and hunger, against the background of which the people's soul emerges, which with a quiet hope peers into the future."
