"The research and documentary publication presents materials on the events of the Second World War in Kyiv. Through the prism of documents of Soviet secret services, Nazi punitive teams, and the civil occupation administration – most of which are published for the first time – the authors of the collection have tried to trace the place of the capital's society in the functioning of state structures, to show the impact of war on the life of an average citizen. New documents from sectorial state archives of the Security Service of Ukraine, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine (and other archives) make it possible to recreate a complete picture of the city's life during the years of total violence, to present controversial points of view, and, finally, to answer the question about what most troubled ordinary people of Kyiv, how they organized their everyday life, survived, overcame difficulties and hardships, how they set up their relations with the governments.
The publication should be interesting for a wide readership."
