"The countless upheavals during the Civil War are perhaps among the most difficult and confusing periods in the long history of Kyiv, and the culmination of them happened just on the two days that Stefan Mashkevich has picked up for consideration. The book describes the events of August 30-31, 1919 in a chronologically accurate way – that was when due to tripartite confrontation the power in the city changed twice in two days. The author obtained access to rare books, magazines, almanacs, documents, memoirs, statistical data stored in archives and libraries not only in Ukraine, but also in Russia, France, and the United States. Having processed this huge amount of information, he was able to present the facts in a live and plain language, while seeking to avoid personal judgments.

The publication is well illustrated, it includes more than ninety photographs, including rare portraits of leaders of the opposing parties. The book's appendix is a restored German map of Kyiv of 1918."
