Martin Pollack. Do Halychyny. About Hasids, Hutsuls, Poles, and Rusyns. (To Galicia)
"To Galicia" (1984) is the first book by Martin Pollack where the writer dispels the Austrian "sugar" myth about the former crown lands of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. His imaginary journey passes through Eastern Galicia the landscapes of neediness and destitution, where oil tycoons and miracle working rabbis grotesquely coexist with poor Jewish shtetls, where Rusyns, Poles, Romanians, Hutsuls, Armenians, Karaites, Germans, Roma barely survive in the corrupt and illiterate region, where a multilingual cultural mosaic is being created simultaneously and fine literature is being written.
The book's full title: "To Galicia. About Hasids, Hutsuls, Poles, and Rusyns. An imaginary journey through the world of Eastern Galicia and Bukovyna that no longer exists."
The book is illustrated with original photographs from the author's archive.
